Illustration Notes for Episode Sixty
I know, I know. I talked once about steering clear of portraits, but since then I’ve learned that sometimes—quite a few times, actually—I can’t seem to help myself. This week the urge toward portraiture was even more compelling than usual, because Lita’s role in Matt’s Tale is—for better and worse—very much about the way she looks—among other things, of course.
But how DOES she look? That was the central question I was exploring in this image. If you’ve read this week’s episode, you know how she looked to Matthew then. Since, to my mind, illustrations should add meaning to what they illustrate, I didn’t just want this image to reiterate what Matthew had already told you. I wanted you to see Lita for yourself, and maybe even ask is this the person Matt was seeing? Lita is a complicated person—with a complicated past. There are a LOT of things going on behind that lovely face, and I wanted you to wonder, maybe, just exactly what it is that YOU see in her expression here. If your answers don’t all end up matching Matt’s that day…maybe that’s not so far off target. :]
